Third Sunday of Lent
Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” John 18:35-37
Meditation
The Gospel of John provides information about Pilate’s questioning of Jesus that is not found in the other Gospels. Jesus makes clear that he has a kingdom, although not one of this world. Jesus is not referring to an earthly kingdom, and that causes considerable confusion. One of the reasons many people followed him is because they mistook him for an earthly king, one that would free them from the oppressive Roman government. They were disillusioned when Jesus refused to use the powers he displayed throughout his ministry to save himself from his gruesome end.
Jesus tells Pilate that he came to testify to the truth. John 18:38 records Pilate as asking, “What is truth?” If Jesus answered the question, his response was not recorded.
Spiritual discipline
Attend worship at the church of your choice. Hold the picture of Jesus before Pilate in your mind. In the evening, review the lessons, notes, and experience of your Lenten journey of this past week.
Prayer
Jesus, my King, reveal your kingdom to me so I can reside there with you. Remind me to hold loosely to the kingdom of earth, for this will not be my home forever. I need to focus on you, your truth, and the kingdom of heaven, where you rule. Amen.
