Station 7, Day 1
Jesus takes up his cross
After mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. Mark 15:20
Meditation
Jesus now begins his final earthly journey. He is required to carry his cross to Golgotha – the Hill of the Skull – where he will be crucified. Tradition implies this may have been a lengthy walk, from the Governor’s courtyard to a hill outside the city walls. The road believed to be taken by Jesus is still there, marked as the Via Dolorosa, the Way of Suffering. Those traveling to the Holy Land can retrace the steps of Jesus, from his flogging to his death.
Scripture tells us that Jesus fell under the weight of his cross at least once. Church tradition indicates he fell many times.
Spiritual Discipline
Fast for the next 4 days by staying awake 15 minutes longer than usual. Utilize the extra time for study, reflection, prayer, and journaling. As you wait to retire, remember Jesus, stumbling under his cross. When you awake in the morning, sleepier than usual, remember the weight of the cross resting on Jesus’ raw shoulders. When you yawn throughout the day, remember the Jesus walking the Via Dolorosa.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, my Savior and my King, I know you walked the road of suffering on my behalf. It is me, and not you, who is guilty of acting as if I am God. It is me, and not you, who is defiant against God’s ultimate authority. It is me, and not you, who deserves to be punished. Forgive me, Lord. Amen.
